Mission Statement
MISSION STATEMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL BOARD OF ELECTRODIAGNOSIS
The International Board Of Electrodiagnosis (IBE) is a Nonprofit Corporation that exists for
and is dedicated to the following purposes:
1. To provide an outlet for expression and communication of professional opinions
for the benefit and enhancement of the field of electrodiagnosis as they relate to
health care, to best serve humankind.
2. To promote and foster the understanding and use of principles and techniques in
the field of electrodiagnosis and support those principles, policies and practices that
seek the attainment of the highest order of excellence in clinical skills directed at
patient care by doctors of medicine and doctors of chiropractic.
3. To promote the highest standards of moral and ethical conduct amongst doctors
performing electrodiagnostic examinations.
4. The pursuit of excellence in education especially as it concerns the promotion of
post-graduate courses of study in electrodiagnosis.
5. To disseminate scientific and scholarly information and educational materials
relevant to electrodiagnosis through the establishment and maintenance an IBE
journal (electronic and/or printed format) and website.
6. To encourage the development of standard practice parameters and patterns in
the area of electrodiagnosis.
7. Support for the quest of scientific knowledge by support for research in
neuroscience and a high plane of competence and of clinical value to the literature of
electrodiagnosis and neurophysiology.
8. To outline the scope of the electrodiagnostician and to encourage the recognition
of this scope of practice amongst the health care profession and in doctoral level
primary care programs at colleges and universities.
9. Achieve and preserve the purposes of the IBE.
10. To encourage interest amongst medical and chiropractic doctors to enter this
field of specialty.
11. To protect in every proper and reasonable way the professional welfare and
interest of the members of the IBE.
12. To work and cooperate with medical schools, chiropractic colleges and
universities, state licensing boards and other Federal, state and private agencies, or
appropriate committees, councils and departments as necessary.
13. To enhance the quality of the field of electrodiagnosis through the voluntary
certification process, by maintaining a certification board in electrodiagnosis. The
IBE shall serve to develop and conduct testing programs in the field of
electrodiagnosis, identify those students who are qualified specialists in
electrodiagnosis, and issue appropriate certifications and designations to those
who successfully complete such programs.
The IBE shall:
- Describe, in terms of knowledge and skills, a doctor with special expertise in
evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with neurologic disorders, or who
require electrodiagnostic assessment;
- Set the standards for knowledge and skills required for certification using valid
methodology;
- Construct and administer comprehensive, psychometrically valid, unbiased,
examinations designed to evaluate those skills and knowledge;
- Monitor, evaluate and improve the standards and procedures of the certification
process;
- Set standards for the quality and scope of post-graduate training programs to
ensure that their graduates will obtain necessary training credit toward certification;
- Issue certificates and other forms of recognition to successful candidates;
- Make available lists of diplomates who have fulfilled the requirements for certification;
- Inform the public, other professions and other organizations of the purposes,
activities and responsibilities of the IBE.
